2 key questions to optimize coding audits

HIMBlog.pngIn our soon to be released second annual HIM Benchmark Report, 70% of HIM leaders indicated they increased auditing efforts in 2016 and a whopping 96% projected to maintain or increase this level of auditing in 2017.

Given the implementation of ICD-10, and the most recent coding specificity changes from CMS, an enhanced audit program certainly can be a good investment. However, is this increased audit activity actually helping you improve the performance of your department?

To find out, quickly answer these two questions:

  1. Are you able to identify coding accuracy issues at a micro diagnostic and procedural level on an individual basis?
  2. Do you have a process in place to correct individual coder performance based on this hyper-targeted data and measure performance on an ongoing basis to ensure improvement?

If you answered "no" to either of these questions you are missing opportunities to utilize auditing more strategically to drive better coder performance within your department.
